Five Years Later

Cricket created senior portraits for Melissa in 2005...Let’s check in and see what she is doing 5 years later. Melissa has just finished her first year of medical school at San Antonio’s University of Texas Health Science Center. Melissa met Dr. Kathryn Wagner, a neurologist from Baltimore, when the doctor spoke at UTHSC San Antonio. Dr Wagner, who holds a MD as well as a PhD, became an inspiration for Melissa and after their meeting invited her to work in Baltimore for the summer at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. Melissa says it is wonderful to work with patients in a clinical setting as well as to do lab research to prevent progression of neuro-muscular diseases. Melissa mentions that, “In medical school it’s easy to get bogged down in the details of classes, exams, and other stresses. It’s refreshing to be able to speak directly with patients and help the doctor with her research. I haven't had the opportunity to do this before.” Good luck Melissa...with your enthusiasm and commitment to helping others you will be an extraordinary physician very soon! |

 Dear
Cricket,
I was thinking of doing my senior portraits at my home. I like the studio, and the parks and gardens of San Antonio where a lot of seniors go, but my home reflects more of me than other places. Would this be a good idea?
Signed,
Close to Home
Dear Close,
It is a great idea to do your senior portraits at home! Think of all the wonderful benefits to a home portrait. All your clothes are there. We can pull things out of your closet and be creative with your outfits on the fly. All your favorite things are in your room...mementos and posters and gadgets and probably your favorite color scheme. You may even have one or more pets that you would like to include. You might look around and see a jumble of stuff, but my job is to isolate things that are interesting, place you in a great composition and light your face beautifully. Senior portraits at home are a fabulous idea. I can hardly wait to get started on yours!
Love,
Cricket

Laura is still trying to find two more women, aged 99 or 100, to complete her project on women and aging. If you know any ladies aged 99 or 100 who would like to participate, please contact Cricket! Meanwhile, Laura is still working with other ages and recently photographed a retired U.S. Air Force two-star General for the project. Susan Pamerleau shared her life story which was fascinating. She started college on a music scholarship for piano and voice, and was later recruited by the Air Force, going on to be one of the few female Generals in history. Meeting women like this through the project has been a privilege and an inspiration. To view all the portraits and read quotes from the participants, visit... www.embraceyourage.net
P.S. Remember to contact Laura if you know a 99 or 100 year old lady! |

"Laura, Wow! I and the rest of the family were floored by your amazing work! Yes, Corinne does have some natural beauty (says me) but you have worked your magic to make her absolutely lovely. Thank you a million times over."

News
Summertime means the kids are home and who would have thought that teenagers could be so much work? I must have gone wrong somewhere because they are not doing any of the helpful chores that model children do in books and movies. They do not wash dishes, cut grass, make beds, vacuum, or do laundry. Mostly they tell me they are hungry and ask what there is to eat. When they are not hungry, they are telling me what time they need to be driven to a friend’s house, cinema, party, pool, or restaurant. On the other hand, I must not have messed up too badly because they don’t do any of the horrible things that bad children do in books and movies and on the 10:00 News. I will not tempt fate by listing those undesirable activities, but you know what they are.
Sofia is 16 and a good driver now. I no longer look over my shoulder when she changes lanes or merges on the highway. Often I sit in the backseat and just enjoy the ride. She will be going to an Arts Camp in Michigan this summer to study viola. They have to wear a dorky uniform consisting of navy pants and a powder blue polo, tucked in, with powder blue socks and closed shoes. No flip flops are allowed; tough for a child who has worn nothing else for the past 5 years. I think this getup is meant to make everyone look shapeless so they will concentrate on their music.
Alex is 13 and seems to be having a good time running around with his neighborhood friends this summer. He loves to shop for clothes and to admire himself in the mirror. He could talk all day about his hair and the various phases it goes through between haircuts as the waves move from flipping out to flipping in. The child is brilliant but obviously needs a better focus for his energies. He will be attending Trinity University to study medicine for 3 weeks. Maybe that will do the trick. He says he wants to be a surgeon and I am very thankful that he has a goal which is both legal and will produce enough income to keep him in designer clothes.

Heart Gallery
The Heart Gallery of San Antonio is a project which helps children who need adoptive homes. Many of these children are older, have special needs or are in family groups. Volunteer photographers, such as Cricket, create portraits of the children to exhibit in the community and online to help find homes for them. The number of children who need homes is staggering.
